A rabbit outwits the great Dragon King in this adaptation of one of Korea's best-loved folk tales.
Like many tales from the oral literature, it's origin is ancient and it's age uncertain. However, the first known written version dates from around A.D. 642, during the Shila Dynasty. Many versions have appeared over the centuries. The tale is often called "The Hare's Liver", because the dragon King convinced the rabbit's liver has curative properties. For this retelling, the author and illustrator have substituted the rabbit's heart. Although the tale is Korean in origin, the artist has drawn on Eastern and Western sources to illustrate the story's imaginary world.
