Staircase to the Moon is a beautiful story about a young girl and her grandfather who sneak away from home one night in a bid to climb the staircase to the moon. The pair brave blood-thirsty mosquitoes, dive-bombing fruit bats, boab trees that loom like giants and sinking mangrove mud before making it to the foot of the staircase. From there they climb the steps and have the time of their lives, leaping like acrobats on the moon’s surface.
Delightful illustrations in ink and watercolour bring to life the excitement and adventure of this fantastic story for young readers.
Staircase to the Moon is based on a natural phenomenon occurring at Broome in the remote north-west of Western Australia. As the full moon climbs above the horizon, it reflects across exposed mudflats at low tide, creating the illusion of a rising staircase. The spectacle draws thousands of sight-seeing tourists each year.
