This is a brand new mat and therefore takes time to manufacturer and ship
"Aroha" in Maori means "Love"
This design represents the love of a family unit. There are 3 symbolic Koru in this design representing the father as the guardian, protecting his wife and child
Koru is a word that is synonymous with New Zealand Maori culture, all you have to do is take a look at the Air New Zealand tail and you'll see a "Koru" proudly flying and even Air New Zealand's premium travel lounges are proudly called "Koru Lounges"
The "Koru" is a Maori symbol that represents a "Punga Tree" fern unfolding as a new leaf. The meaning represents new life, a new beginning, re-growth, peace and tranquility, the "Koru" reaches for the light, striving for perfection, encouraging new positive beginnings.....
This traditional motif, was for thousands of years used on "Waka's" or traditional canoes that sailed the South Pacific and Polynesian waters.
Today many New Zealanders use the "Koru" as a symbol that represents being a New Zealander, many kiwi's have "Koru" tattoo's on their bodies or you may see bone or jade carvings of the "Koru" symbol.
Today we have taken this truly New Zealand symbol of culture and created contemporary recycled mats to be used in both an indoor or outdoor environment.
The beauty of these mats don't just lie in its visual appeal though.
Being made from a durable recycled-plastic means our siapo ( South Pacific style of mat) mats are completely child-friendly, making them ideal for child care centers, schools and high traffic children's areas in the home. They are also suitable for the new EYLF requirements and fit into both requirements of environmental and multicultural factors for the learning environment for children.
Their versatility, light weight and durability is only enhanced by how easy they are to keep clean. Dirt and food spills need no longer be a problem in any child care centre, school or home. Simply vacuum up the offending spills, give them a quick wash over with soapy water, then toss them over the line or fence to dry. Easy!
Common Uses:
• Play mat in child care centers and Kindies
• Spread it on the floor to catch paint spills while the kids are having fun
• Use it on school or family outings
• Perfect for the beach – sand just washes off
• High traffic areas
• Brighten a classroom or kids play room
The possibilities are endless with our siapo mats. They even folds or roll up for easy storage.
Note: That all our mats are reversible so a green/white mat is green with white Koru on one side and on the other is a white mat with green "Koru" on the other
All our products have been made to the best attainable standards from UV treated recycled polypropylene. We make no assertions on the longevity of the product as there are too many variables including care, exposure to continuous direct sunlight, contact with abrasive cleaners etc
Colours - Why did we choose Red, Green & Black for our 3 colours? Well, red of course is the colour of love and that is what Aroha means, black is synnomous with New Zealand culture (Go the All Blacks!) and lime green is the colour of new growth in a punga tree which is where the koru springs to life from
The Aroha design has been created by the very talented husband and wife team Milton and Lyn Tupaea from Tupaea Designz
